What’s Going On Between Cambodia and Thailand Right Now - July 2025

What’s Happening at the Cambodia Thailand Border

If you are planning a trip to Cambodia or crossing over from Thailand, you might have seen the recent news about fighting along the border. If you’ve visited our site before, you may have read our newsletter about the growing tension between the two countries. Sadly, there have now been reports of lives lost in these clashes.

Should You Still Visit Cambodia?

The good news is that the situation is very limited to border provinces. If you plan to visit Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampot, or Cambodia’s islands, life is completely normal and safe for travelers.

These disputed areas are rural and mostly visited by locals, soldiers, or a few temple explorers. Unless you’re planning to hike remote jungle temples right on the border, you won’t be affected.

You may still see some demonstrations on the street or people putting up signs to support the troop here and there, but it’s safe to go about your daily life.

Which Areas Should You Avoid?

Travelers should avoid overland crossings through remote checkpoints in provinces like Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, and Preah Vihear. These areas are closer to where the military has been active. For now, it’s better to fly directly into Phnom Penh or Siem Reap rather than taking a bus or car from northeastern Thailand.

Flights between Thailand and Cambodia are running normally, and popular crossings like Poipet are open but may have delays. Always check with your bus company, hotel, or guide for the latest updates.

How to Stay Updated

News can change quickly, so it’s smart to check a few reliable sources before you cross. We recommend keeping an eye on updates from AP News, Al Jazeera, CNN and BBC. Many embassies also post travel alerts on their websites, so check yours for the latest safety advice.

If you’re booking a tour or ride through your hotel, ask staff if they’ve heard any news before you head near the border. Locals usually know what roads are closed or risky long before it makes big news.

Travel Smart and Enjoy Your Trip

Most travelers will not feel any impact from this border issue. Cambodia’s cities, temples, islands, and countryside remain open and peaceful. As long as you avoid the small conflict areas, you can relax and enjoy the adventure you came for.
