Pong Tea Kon – Cambodia’s Bold Street Snack You Have to Try

Pong Tea Kon

Pong Tea Kon: Not Your Usual Egg

If you're visiting Cambodia and want to try something that locals really love, look out for Pong Tea Kon (ពងទាកូន). It’s a fertilized duck egg, and yes — it's exactly what it sounds like. A partially developed duck embryo, boiled and eaten right from the shell.

Sounds intense? Maybe. But ask any Khmer person and they'll tell you it's one of the tastiest and most satisfying snacks around.

You’ll usually see street vendors selling these warm eggs in the evening. Locals crack them open, add a pinch of salt, a squeeze of lime, and maybe a few leaves of fresh herbs like mint or basil. The yolk is rich, the broth inside is flavorful, and if the duck part makes you pause… just give it a try. Many travelers say it’s not as scary as it sounds.

Generally it costs about $0.50 to $1 each depending on where you get it. We know that it’s very intimidating, you don’t need to try if you don’t like but if you want to be adventurous and have a fun story to tell when you go back to your country, this would be a good story.
