If you are visiting Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm, there’s one more temple you absolutely should not miss, Bayon Temple, located in the heart of Angkor Thom. Some people call it Angkor Thom Temple, but most locals, including our team, simply call it Bayon. That’s the name we’ll use here.
What makes Bayon so special is its many carved faces. From a distance, you might not notice them, but as you walk closer, you’ll start to see dozens of serene, smiling stone faces looking down from the towers. The details are incredible, and standing among them feels almost otherworldly. It’s one of those moments in Cambodia you’ll remember forever.
The best part? Bayon Temple is just about a 15-minute drive from Angkor Wat, so you can easily fit it into the same day’s itinerary. Many visitors explore Angkor Wat in the morning, then head to Bayon before lunch or in the cooler late afternoon.
A quick tip from us locals, bring plenty of water or refill your bottle before you go. It can get very hot, especially if you’re climbing around the temple to get those great views and photos.
If you love ancient history, unique architecture, and a truly magical atmosphere, Bayon Temple should be at the top of your list when exploring Siem Reap. We’ve been there many times, and it still amazes us every single visit.
